From Day Laborer’s Son to Garage Owner

Md. Ibrahim Khan | Entrepreneur | Bagerhat Sadar

My name is Md. Ibrahim Khan, and I come from Badamtola village in Bagerhat Sadar. My father was a day laborer and had been unwell for many years. From a young age, I understood that I had to take responsibility for my family.

Due to financial hardship and my father’s illness, I could not continue my studies beyond the seventh grade. I had to start working at a very young age. I began at a motorcycle garage, earning just 200 BDT per day—enough to support my parents and siblings.

Later, I secured a monthly job at another garage for 12,000 BDT. In 2019, when my father’s condition worsened, I became the sole breadwinner for my family. By then, I had also started my own family and became a father of two. In the gaps between work, I taught my younger brother how to repair vehicles. I always dreamed of owning my own garage, but a lack of business knowledge and confidence held me back.

During this time, I learned about an entrepreneurship development training offered by BRAC. Through the training, I learned how to plan a business, manage accounts, and interact with customers effectively. That’s when I realized—I can start now.

After completing the training, I rented a shop at Dosani Mor and launched Dosani New Garage, offering car repairs, parts sales, car washing, and engine services.

Today, I earn about 25,000 BDT per month. Most importantly, I no longer work for someone else—I am the owner of my own work.

I can proudly say that without this training, I might still be working in someone else’s garage. Now I can provide well for my family, and that is my greatest achievement.
