Rebuilding Life Through Skills and Determination

My name is Shirin Sultana, and I live in Halsa, Natore. At one point, my life took an unexpected turn. My husband fell seriously ill. For years he had been managing our family pharmacy. His illness, frequent hospital visits, and the stress of treatment meant he could no longer run the business.

During this period, nearly 4 million BDT worth of our medicines expired, and we faced a severe financial crisis. I could see no way to sustain our household. It was then that I decided—I had to step up. Alongside caring for my husband and family, I began managing the daily operations of the pharmacy. With the help of a few employees and my young son, I slowly took on responsibility. Yet fear, uncertainty, and pressure often felt overwhelming.

It was during this challenging time that I learned about a skills development training offered by BRAC, and I joined the program. There, I learned how to run a business efficiently, follow proper procedures, and make thoughtful, planned decisions. Previously, I had only determination and effort; this training taught me how to manage business in a structured and sustainable way.

I have always been passionate about natural, healthy foods. Inspired by this interest, I started a business in organic products. I began with honey collected from forest hives and gradually expanded my offerings to include moringa leaf powder, beetroot powder, dry fruits, chia seeds, mustard, and more. I personally supervise the sourcing and processing of each product to ensure quality. My moringa powder has received BSTI approval, and our honey has passed multiple tests by the Consumer Rights Protection Authority—achievements that fill me with immense pride.

At the same time, I introduced structured systems in the pharmacy—employment contracts, fire safety measures, and first-aid facilities. Applying the knowledge I gained from the training, I was also able to secure a 1 million BDT loan, which helped stabilize my business.

Though personal hardships remain, today my income has grown, and my family’s financial security is stronger than ever. Looking ahead, I aim to expand my organic products into local markets and supermarkets while ensuring the pharmacy continues to thrive.
