It is, indeed, a matter of deep shock and dismay beyond imagination with which we have received the sad news that Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, founder of BRAC, the largest NGO in the world and your beloved father has passed away on 20 December 2019, while undergoing treatment at the Apollo Hospital Dhaka; Mere words are inadequate to bring relief at such an irreparable loss. This is in fact a huge loss for Bangladesh, for you and the members of your family as well as for the entire BRAC family who have lost their beloved person. On my own behalf and on behalf of the Republic of Poland, the Honorary Consulate General in Bangladesh is expressing our deepest condolences at this hour of grief. Sir Fazle Hasan Abed was a great visionary, philanthropist and entrepreneur in Bangladesh as well as in the world who contributed his dedicated effort with courage, knowledge and far-sightedness in achieving the betterment of the people till breathing his last. We do believe all his noble efforts will remain in memory and will inspire people worldwide to carry forward his incomplete tasks left behind him. I am deeply saddened at the passing of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed. I had the privilege of knowing him over many years, and remember fondly many interactions, whether social or professional, for example when he sought to open Brac`s office in Afghanistan, extending the organizations impact to rebuilding that nation. What struck me most was the humility with which he talked and moved about despite his achievements. Despite the scale and depth of what he achieved with Brac, he always looked for new ideas, accepted new challenges, and found new solutions to development problems, in Bangladesh and around the globe. I am so sorry to hear this news. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and the broader BRAC family. What an amazing life and legacy! Abed left a mark on all of those who had the privilege of working with him, and even those who never met him, who were inspired to join BRAC because of him. His work affected millions of other people`s lives, far and wide, yet despite this and his many achievements and accolades, he always insisted that it was the poor and marginalized who deserved the real credit for ending poverty. The role of people like him -- and people like us, and others working in development -- is simply to create the enabling conditions for them to do so.
