A GLOBAL COMMUNITY`S LOSS

The world has lost an angel. Sir Fazle Hasan Abed`s life is an inspiring story for us all. It is story of love, affection, care, concern, tenacity, resilience and courage in the service of the people. Sir Abed played an extraordinary and pivotal role in the lives of so many needy and underprivileged people. Through BRAC, he empowered so many communities in situations of poverty, illiteracy, disease, health-care and social injustice, among others. I would like to express ISAS` and my sincere condolences to Sir Abed`s family as we come together to not only mourn the passing of a great person, but to also salute and celebrate his achievements and his life. Our heartfelt condolences

On behalf of the World Bank Group, I convey profound sorrow on the demise of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed. The world has lost a visionary leader who helped lift millions of poor and vulnerable people around the world out of poverty. Under Sir Fazle’s far-sighted leadership, BRAC embodied many development innovations that helped reduce poverty and boost shared prosperity, especially for vulnerable women, children and people in rural areas. In Bangladesh, BRAC has been an integral part of the country’s remarkable development progress. BRAC and the World Bank Group have worked closely in several initiatives, including education, social protection, financial inclusion and public procurement reforms. We remain committed to continue our close collaboration. Sir Fazle will be fondly remembered and will remain an inspiration for the development community in general and for the World Bank Group in particular. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time, and we ask that you please accept our heartfelt condolences.

Our deepest condolences

It is with immense sadness that we learned about the demise of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, founder of BRAC. He will forever remain in our memories as a visionary leader and an indomitable humanitarian who changed the lives of millions of people across the globe. He did not wield any magic wand; instead, he dedicated all his resources into making them realise their potentials and the inner strength that every human being possesses. What he also did along the way is to inspire thousands of humanitarians to come under one umbrella, that is BRAC, and join forces to the common cause of helping those who need it the most. Today, we too have lost a family member. From 2001 to 2006, Sir Fazle served as a member of IRRI`s Board of Trustees and played an instrumental role in setting the scientific directions, policies and strategies to usher in the new millennium. We will never be able to fill the void that he has left behind. On behalf of IRRI, please accept our deepest condolences to you, his family and everyone at BRAC

a few memories with Abed bhai that will last a lifetime

I have been working for Brac for about 2 years now. But I feel like I am a part of this organisation for 20 years! Mostly because my learning curve has been so steep and I have networked with hundreds of people through Brac`s platform. At the launch of Generation Unlimited (a youth accelerator platform organised by Unicef) back in March; Abed bhai was invited to meet the Executive Director of Unicef, Henrietta Fore. While discussing skills training at scale for youth of Bangladesh with high government official, Brac`s then skills director, Asif bhai and others, Abed bhai looked at me and said, `So can you scale up Brac`s skills initiative to reach 1 million through apprenticeship programme by 2030?` I immediately said, `Yes!` I said yes because I knew my team and I knew with the right structure and funding, Brac`s team can reach any number- because the team is built to scale and reach millions! The confidence came from the people in the field who made it possible! After the meeting, while we were walking towards the car, he said that he liked my confidence. I told Abed bhai that the confidence came from the people and the evidence we have generated in proving that Brac`s localised skills model works and the government or Unicef in Bangladesh will partner with Brac, if they wanted to scale skills! This is my short and sweet memory, among others, with Abed bhai. Here at Brac, I have learnt to say `ha bhai, parbo!` The confidence comes from within, the confidence he was able to ignite within us.

Tribute to Sir Fazle Hasan Abed

Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, KCMG – a consummate gentleman I felt great sadness last night as I deleted the name Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, KCMG from my Christmas Greetings list. What an ambassador for Bangladesh… what an ambassador for humanity… what a consummate gentleman… what a hero. Of the 160-million population, or so, in Bangladesh I doubt if there is another businessman who could come even close matching his rare and fine qualities. During the two decades of I visiting Bangladesh I never once sighted a controversial report of any description that shadowed his impeccable good name. He was the quiet hero who everyone admired and he avoided the spotlight that so many seek, as if it were cancerous. His name was synonymous with honourable business practices, humility and humanity. He was honoured with numerous national and international awards for his achievements, none of which he intentionally pursued, but were bestowed in recognition of his admirable works. He was the silent achiever who transformed the lives of countless people through quality education and by other means. Just shaking his hand will be remembered as a great honour by many, and rightly so. His departure is sad, an enormous loss to Bangladesh and the 11 other countries he serviced, but his illustrious name and noble works will live on in the hearts of people eternally. If only Bangladesh had more people like him… if only the world had more people like him. I feell so honoured to have shaken his hand. Sir Frank Peters, Gulshan.

Dear Abed Bhai

Abed Bhai, You have enlightened the lives of millions of poorest in Bangladesh and the rest of the world. Your actions have shown the ways to many other stakeholders and followed you. You have started with the vision for charity and ended with the vision for change in a sustainable manner. Your different multi-disciplinary initiatives including business concept is giving good return to all including BRAC itself to be self-sustained. Good vision since donors might not give you money throughout the journey. You did so many things very successfully and yet a quality medical centre is missing and so I request to BRAC management to establish a specialised hospital in the name of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed where again millions of people might get world best treatment; where people will no longer go abroad for treatment. Bless and be blessed by the almighty. Bijoy Krishna Nath

The nation lost a guardian

We the Eastern Bank Ltd. (EBL) family is deeply saddened at the news of the death of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed. With him we have lost a guardian, a leader, a visionary, who has always been at the forefront of our fight against poverty, who has led the way to empower women, who has shown us to dream on the face of difficulties. The death of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed is an end of era. The vacuum that has been created with his passing in transformational leadership is irreplaceable. A go-getter until his last breath, an avant-gardist, an iconic development practitioner has transformed millions of lives in Bangladesh and beyond, and changed the way the world thinks about development. BRAC is not only the largest non-governmental organization in the world but also a ray of hope to attest poverty from this planet. Sir Fazle was a global leader and a role model for all of us. He empowered those in extreme poverty to build better futures for themselves and their families. His legacy will live on in all the people whose lives are better, healthier and more secure because of his remarkable service. Not only Bangladesh, the world has lost a visionary leader. Please accept our deepest condolences for all his colleagues at BRAC and his bereaved family. His legacy will last forever and we will draw inspiration from his life’s work and philosophy to work for a better tomorrow.

All of us are grieving

It is difficult to describe in words the impact that Sir Abed had on the plight of the world’s most vulnerable in Bangladesh and globally. He was a genuine giant. And a wonderful human being. I had the privilege of knowing him for the past 7 years. He was a friend and a mentor to me. And I will never forget him. As a physician I knew that his end was near. But still his passing came as a huge shock. I am still trying to absorb it. I express my sincere condolences to his family, to BRAC, to the people of #Bangladesh, and to the entire development community of the world. All of us are grieving.
