Climate Change Programme
Since 1972, BRAC has worked to empower communities facing poverty and social injustice. With over 50 years of experience, its mission is to create a world free from exploitation and discrimination. In 2008, the Disaster Management and Climate Change (DMCC) programme was established to address escalating disaster and environmental risks. By 2018, this evolved into the dedicated Climate Change Programme (CCP), which focuses on developing adaptation models and integrating climate resilience into development activities. Aligned with BRAC’s Strategy, the CCP mainstreams climate action by generating evidence and building partnerships to protect marginalised and vulnerable populations of the climate change hotspots.

Project/Unit: Rain for Life project
Bangladesh's coastal areas are highly vulnerable to climate change, with estimates indicating that by 2050, around 27 million people could face displacement due to sea level rise. Rising salinity in soil and water has negatively affected seasonal agriculture and led to severe water shortages. Over 60% of the population lacks access to safe drinking water, impacting both domestic and agricultural needs. In Bangladesh, 30% of cultivable land is coastal, much of which remains unused in the dry season due to salinity. Between 1979 and 2014, soil salinity increased by about 26% and is expected to reach 39% by 2050, affecting even non-coastal areas. Farmers suffer financial losses from a 7–10% decline in agricultural production linked to climate change, leading to reduced food supply and higher prices, exacerbating food insecurity. Mongla, Assasuni, and Patharghata Upazilas are adjacent to the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest, which is recognized as an Ecological Critical Area (ECA) and is a government priority. Developing sustainable livelihoods for poor and marginalised communities in this region is essential for maintaining the ecosystem's global significance. Leveraging existing Nature-based Solutions (NbS) such as coastal green belts through afforestation and restoration of water bodies, will be crucial for future resilience and sustainability. To address the situation BRAC designed the project titled “Rain for Life: Integrated Climate Adaptive Water and Agricultural Solutions for Community and Ecosystem Resilience in Bangladesh's coastal zone” with funding from Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The project duration is three years.

Project/Unit: Improved Sustainable Reintegration of Bangladeshi Returnee Migrants (Prottasha II)
Migration has become an attractive livelihood option for many young people in Bangladesh in recent years. Young people who decide to pursue working abroad are vulnerable to trafficking, forced labour and other forms of modern slavery when they use irregular channels and processes of migration. Despite being aware of the risks, many aspiring migrants still pursue irregular channels because they believe that they will not be able to secure a work visa through the regular/formal process. Europe is a key destination for aspiring migrants in search of a better life, including good jobs. Recent years have seen a rise in irregular migration from Bangladesh. The number of women migrants has also been on the rise. In the last five years, more than half a million women went overseas for employment, accounting for 10% of the total labour migration. Most returnees face various social and economic challenges once they return home. These include inadequate or insufficient social protection, loans and other financial burdens, lack of health and medical services, unemployment and social stigma at the family and community levels. It is encouraging that the EU and the GOB are committed to ensuring access to skills and jobs for returning and prospective migrants; however, many remained outside scope of Prottasha phase I. In response to the above issues, this project will identify gaps in migration processes and ensure that migrants receive efficient, reliable and accessible migration services contributing to comprehensive and sustainable reintegration. Also, Prottasha II will raise awareness amongst potential migrants about safe and regular migration opportunities and processes to reduce the incidence of irregular migration.
Overall Objective: To contribute to the sustainable reintegration of Bangladeshi returnee migrants and promote safe migration.
Specific Objective: To improve the sustainable reintegration of Bangladeshi returnees and their families into their communities in a gender-sensitive manner.
