About BRAC Uganda: In June 2006, BRAC began operating its Microfinance
Program in two districts in Uganda - Kampala
and Iganga. The program has successfully
formed 2,352 groups, mobilized 63,407 poor
women as members and disbursed US$16.1 million
in micro loans to 43,967 members. Loans are
invested primarily in small scale business,
agriculture, and construction. Additionally,
an education program has started community
teachers training and opening learning centers
for out of school children in Kitgum. BRAC Uganda has set up
58 learning centers and trained 58 teachers (100% female) for its primary education
program. There are currently 1,891 children enrolled, and
844 have graduated from the program.

- Enrolled 1,891 out of school children
- 844 children have graduated
- Trained 58 community teachers; 100%
of whom are women
Health Program
- Established 10 health offices
- Conducted 1,088 health forums with 26,315 participants (100% female)
- Trained 183 Community Health Workers, who reach 183,000 people
New Programs:
Adolescent Development Program
The program will be implemented in the Kitgum
and Pader districts of Uganda for adolescent
girls who have never been to school or who
have dropped out. Centers will be set up
to encourage socialization, recreation,
continuing education, and will provide life

- 36 centers set up (out of 100)
- 62 mentors trained (out of 100
- 778 adolescent girl members (out of 2,500)
Agriculture and Livestock Development
This program will be an integral part of
BRAC Uganda’s microfinance program. Farmers
will receive training in modern cultivation
techniques; access to improved varieties
of seeds and other inputs; and training
to market their products. BRAC is currently preparing to
provide training for 400 agricultural workers, 20,000 farmers
and 40,000 livestock rearers. So far, BRAC has provided training and supposrt for:
- 280 agricultural workers
- 315 livestock rearers
- 195 poultry rearers
