About BRAC Southern Sudan
BRAC involvement in Sudan began in early
2007 with five branch offices in three payam
covering 56 Boma in and around Juba. The
microfinance program was established in
May 2007 and has already formed 481 groups
and distributed US$1.6 million in loans.
BRAC Southern Sudan currently has 140 employees, 88% of whom are Sudanese.

Microfinance Program
Established in May 2007
- Operates 17 microfinance branches
- Formed 153 groups
- Serves 11,263 members, 5,603 of whom have cumulatively
borrowed US$1.6 million
New Programs:
Health Program
- Operates six branches
- Trained 120 Community Health Promoters, who reach 144,000 people
Education Program
- Opened 10 community schools (out of 100)
- Trained 12 teachers (out of 100)
- 300 students currently enrolled (out of 3,000)
Agriculture & Livestock Program
- established two trial pots for testing seeds and fertilizer
- Trained 47 farmers
Income Generation for Vulnerable Group Development
This program will be implemented through
support from BRAC and the World Food Program
(WFP) to combine food aid with training
and credit for 500 returnee refugee women.
