In April 2007, BRAC signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Pakistan to establish programs in the fields of microfinance, education and health.  2008 represented BRAC Pakistan’s first full year of operations.  BRAC is currently implementing its microfinance program in three provinces – Punjab, Northwest Frontier Province (NWFP) and Sindh and plans to extend into the Balochistan province by the end of 2009.  A pilot pre-primary education program in the NWFP and a pilot health program have also received funding and started activities in early 2009.

Microfinance Program:
In August 2007, BRAC set up an initial 10 branch offices in the NWFP and in February 2008 BRAC successfully registered with Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, which allowed BRAC to carry out micro-finance operations in Pakistan.

BRAC operates a total of 46 branch offices between 9 districts
Mobilized 45,822 group members; 35,000 of which have borrowed.
Over $7,000,000 in microloans had been dispersed
Has been offering microloans (group-based and exclusively for women) and small enterprise loans (individual loans for men and women)

Education Program:

In March 2009, BRAC Pakistan received a grant from BRAC USA to fund the opening of 20 pre-primary schools in the Horipur district of the NWFP.
The total enrollment is 612 students, of which 376 are girls and 236 or boys between the ages of 4 and 5 years old
This  pilot program is designed to replicate BRAC’s extensive pre-primary and primary school experience in Bangladesh

Health Program:

In 2009, BRAC Pakistan received a grant from BRAC USA to fund a pilot health program that will be implemented in 10 working areas where BRAC has an existing microfinance presence.
The pilot program will train 100 microfinance members to become Community Health Volunteers.
Peer-to-peer health care services and health education are projected to reach more than 60,000 community members

Agriculture and Livestock Program:

BRAC Pakistan is currently exploring the replication of a variety of on-going BRAC Bangladesh agriculture and livestock related programs.
