Delegates from World Bank, including Mr. Paul Wolfowitz, President, The World Bank, Mr. Praful C. Patel, Vice President, South Asia Region, The World Bank, Ms. Christine I. Wallich, Country Representative, The World Bank, Bangladesh and Ms. Nilufar Ahmed, Senior Social Scientiest, World Bank, Bangladesh, visited some of BRAC’s Urban Programmes on August 21, 2005. They were accompanied by Mr. Fazle Hasan Abed, Founder and Chairperson, BRAC, Mr. Faruque Ahmed, Director, BRAC Health Programme, Mr. Shabbir Ahmed Chowdhury, Director of Microfinance, BRAC and Mr. Shafiqul Islam, Programme Head, BRAC Education Programme. Some of the programmes they visited included the Urban Poor Organisation and the Non-Formal Primary school in Mirpur, Dhaka. The team interacted with members of the urban poor organisations, Volunteer workers, and teachers and students of the BRAC non-formal primary school. An appreciation letter from World Bank stated, “Mr. Paul Wolfowitz and his team were very impressed by the leadership and innovations of women’s group; dedication of community health workers, intelligence and motivation of the children, the commitment and competence of BRAC staff and the guidance provided by Mr. Abed and members of the board.” The World Bank has been supporting Bangladesh in health, education and microfinance with the focus of reaching the disadvantaged groups. Ms. Ahmed further stated in her letter, “We hope to expand our support in the future and our partnership with you will help us in this area.” |
