Sonia is determined to never let her disability stand in the way of building her own life.

She works as a machine operator at Standard Group, a ready-made garments factory in Bangladesh, and financially supports her family.  However, things were not always this secure. Financial constraints made it difficult for Sonia and her husband to make ends meet. Despite her education, companies were not willing to hire her because of her disability.

Sonia did not lose hope. She kept searching for opportunities and came across BRAC Skills Development Programme’s sewing machine operation course. She  joined the course and worked hard in the two-month training programme. Soon after her completion, Sonia landed a job at a garments factory.

Sonia believed in herself to create a life of freedom and security. Till date, more than 3,532 women in the ready-made garment factories have been trained in industry machinery operations by BRAC.
