Muhammad A (Rumee) Ali Mr. Rumee Ali, former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank, has been appointed managing director of Enterprises at BRAC.He will be responsible for the various BRAC enterprises including Aarong, BRAC Dairy and Food Project, BRAC Printers, BRAC Agro and Salt Industry and BRAC Cold Storage.He has also been appointed to the board of directors of BRAC Bank, a release of BRAC said. Mr. Ali obtained his post-graduate degree in Economics in 1973 from Dhaka University and began his career in banking, as management trainee with Grindlays Bank in 1975. His career at Grindlays spanned twenty-five years and three continents, during which he assumed various roles including country operations manager in Dhaka, credit inspector in London and district manager of retail banking in Melbourne. In
March 1997, with his appointment as country head and general manager of
Grindlays Bangladesh, Ali became the first Bangladeshi to head a major
international bank in Bangladesh. In July 2000, following the takeover
of ANZ Grindlays by Standard Chartered Bank, Ali was appointed the CEO
of the Standard Chartered Group in Bangladesh, heading both Standard Chartered
Bank and Standard Chartered Grindlays Bank. Ali was elected a fellow of
the Bangladesh Institute of Bankers in 2001. In November 2002, he was
appointed the deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank. |
