Afsan Chowdhury

Afsan Chowdhury, Director of Advocacy and Human Rights, was born in 1954. He has an MA in History from Dhaka University.

Prior to joining BRAC in 2003, Mr. Chowdhury spent years working in the fields of media advocacy, health rights, communication and social mobilization, AIDS management, gender and protection, child rights, and disaster management. Mr. Chowdhury worked for UNICEF as a media and communications expert, later becoming a freelance consultant and activist in 1994. He is the author of numerous project reports and position papers, and has worked extensively with a host of international NGOs and the Government of Bangladesh. He was nominated Ashoka Fellow for Life on Sex Education in 1998. Mr. Chowdhury was also Regional Director for South Asia of the Panos Institute.

Mr. Chowdhury has spent two decades working in print media, radio, and television. He was an editor at various newspapers, and Founder Promoter of UNB (National News Agency). He was Contributing Producer for a number of BBC World Service series, and is an author of four novels.

 

Ahmed Najmul Hussain

Ahmed Najmul Hussain, Director of Administration and Special Projects, was born in 1948. He did his graduation in Management from Police Staff College, UK.

Prior to joining BRAC in 2001, Mr. Hussain worked in a variety of law enforcement capacities. He was Lieutenant to Major in the Pakistan and Bangladesh Army, Superintendent of Police in seven districts, Additional Inspector General of Bangladesh Police, and Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Mr. Hussain’s other positions include Chairman of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, and Team Leader of the Community Road Safety Initiatives Project of the World Bank.

While at BRAC, Mr. Hussain has worked on a variety of projects related to Road Safety, Advocacy, Vocational Training, Procurement, Transport, Construction, and IT Systems.

Mr. Hussain has received a variety of awards, including the Good Service Badge of the Police Department in 1994, and the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award, UK in 2002.

 

Faruque Ahmed

Faruque Ahmed, Director of BRAC Health Program, was born in 1952. He has an MA in Economics from Dhaka University, and a Masters in Health Sciences from Johns Hopkins University.

Before joining BRAC in 2002 as Director of Nutrition and Health, Mr. Ahmed was a Research Assistant for the Bureau of Economic Research of Dhaka University, Assistant Chief in the Planning Cell of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Bangladesh Government, and Population Specialist and Senior Operations Officer in the Health Nutrition and Population Team of the World Bank Office in Bangladesh.

While at BRAC, Mr. Ahmed worked on a variety of health-related projects, including Essential Health Care Services, National Nutrition Program, Expansion of the Tuberculosis Control Program in partnership with the Government, and HIV/AIDS Community Based Education Program.

 

Imran Matin

Imran Matin, Director of Research & Evaluation Division, was born in 1970. He completed a BA (Hons.) in Economics from Delhi University, and a Ph.D. in Economics from University of Sussex, UK in 1998.

Prior to joining BRAC, Dr. Matin worked as a Poverty Specialist at the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP), World Bank, was Research Fellow at the Poverty Research Unit in Sussex, and Research Consultant at the Springfield Centre for Business in Development in Darham, UK. He also served as the Member Secretary to the 2003 Civil Society Task Force on Poverty Alleviation and Employment Generation. He was a recipient of the ESCOR Research Grant in 1997, and the Over Research Scheme (ORS) Award in 1995.

Dr. Matin joined BRAC in 2001 as a Senior Economist of Research & Evaluation Division, later becoming Research Coordinator, Acting Director, and finally Director. He is the author of numerous articles on micro finance and development.

 

Manzoor Ahmed

Manzoor Ahmed, Project Director of the Institute of Education and Development, was born in 1940. He received a Doctor of Education in Educational Administration in 1966 from University of Northern Colorado, and completed his Post-doctoral studies at Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University.

Prior to joining BRAC in 2003, Dr. Ahmed was an Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor at the Institute of Education and Research at Dhaka University, Chief of the Educational Reforms Implementation Unit, Ministry of Education, Islamabad, Pakistan, and Senior Researcher and Associate Director of the International Council for Educational Development in Essex, Connecticut. Dr. Ahmed also worked for UNICEF in a variety of positions, including Director of the UNICEF Office in Japan, Associate Director, Program Division, UNICEF Head Quarters, UNICEF Representative, Beijing, China, Education Advisor and Deputy Director, Program Development and Planning, UNICEF Head Quarters, and UNICEF Representative, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Dr. Ahmed was a member of the International Planning Committee for World Conference on Education for All in Jomtien, Thailand in 1990. He is also an author of books, journal articles, and conference papers on education and development issues.

Manzoor Hasan is the Director of the Centre for Governance Studies, BRAC University

 

Md. Golam Samdani Fakir

Md. Golam Samdani Fakir, Director of Training Division, was born in 1952. He completed a Ph.D. in Industrial Economics from The Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest, Romania.

Prior to his work at BRAC, Dr. Fakir was an Economic Consultant for Best Industries, Inc., Virginia, USA, Project Economist at the Small Industries Department of Sonali Bank, and then Research Officer in the Food for Relief works impact study project of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, University of Dhaka.

Dr. Fakir joined BRAC in 1984 as a Research Economist, becoming Senior Research Economist the next year. He achieved the position of Chief of Planning and Training, and eventually progressed to his present position in 1997. He is a member of the Academic Council of BRAC University, Academic Chair of the Global Partnership program, and Adjunct Faculty of the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont, USA. He is a Fellow of the International Analysis Association of San Francisco and Singapore, External Examiner of Bangladesh Institute of Management, Founder Member and Chairman of the Society for Action Research and Development, and a member of the Bangladesh Economic Association. Dr. Fakir also works as an international consultant.

 

Muazzem Hasan

Muazzem Hasan, Director of BRAC Printers, was born in 1945. He received a B.Com. in 1968.

Mr. Hasan first joined BRAC in 1972 as an Accountant on the Sulla Project. He became General Manager of BRAC Printers in 1988, and Director in 1989.

 

Safiqul Islam

Safiqul Islam, Director of BRAC Education Programme received his PhD in Economics from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1985.

Prior to joining BRAC in 1987, Dr. Islam was Research Associate at Center for Integrated Rural Development for Asia and Pacific (CIRDAP), a multi-government research organization. At BRAC, he held different positions, including Senior Research Economist at the Research and Evaluation Division and Programme Coordinator at the Monitoring Department till 1995, when he joined BEP. Meanwhile, he also worked for UNICEF in Pakistan during 1997-8 as a consultant to the Government of North-West Frontier Province on different aspects of Non-Formal Education. He was seconded to SIDA to work for the Directorate of Non-Formal Education of the Government of Bangladesh during 2001-2. He was the Head of PACE (Post-Primary Basic and Continuing Education) and BEP at BRAC before his current position as Director.

 

Saieed Bakth Mozumder

Saieed Bakth Mozumder, Director of Tea Estates Division, was born in 1946. He studied history honours at Dhaka University.

Prior to joining BRAC in 2003, Mr. Mozumder worked as Assistant Manager and Manager at the tea company, James Finlay & Co. Ltd. He was Visiting Superintendent and then a General Manager in the National Tea Co. Ltd. Mr. Mozumder became General Manager of Tea Holding (Transcom Group) in 1993. He was also employed by HRC Group to develop two estates under Tea, Rubber & Afforestation as General Manager, and subsequently as Executive Director of Plantation.

Mr. Mozumder was Secretary of Balisera Planters’ Club, and represented the Bangladeshiyo Cha Sangshad on a variety of Boards and Committees. He was also Director of the Board and Executive Committee of One Bank Ltd.

 

Shabbir Ahmed Chowdhury

Mr. Shabbir Ahmed Chowdhury is currently Director of BRAC's Microfinance Programme.

He joined BRAC in 1976 and has worked at the organisation in different capacities in various departments. He was Faculty Member and Trainer in the Training Division of BRAC and Administrator of BRAC's Integrated Development Project (Sulla Project) in Sulla in Sylhet District. He has almost twenty-nine years of experience in working for poverty alleviation and empowerment of the poor.

Mr. Chowdhury holds BA (Hons) and MA in Economics from Dhaka University as well as MA in Development Studies from the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in Hague in the Netherlands.

 

Sheepa Hafiza

Sheepa Hafiza, Director of Human Resources, was born in 1956. She obtained her Masters in International/ Intercultural Management from the School for International Training (SIT), Vermont, USA, a Post Graduate Dilploma in NGO Leadership and Management from SIT in collaboration with the Global Partnership in NGO studies, and M.A. in Public Administration, University of Dhaka.

Prior to joining BRAC in 1990, Ms. Sheepa Hafiza worked as a teacher and language facilitator at Westgate Hill Pilot High School, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Uk. She was the co-author of BRAC technical Manual: An Action Learning Approach to Gender and Organisational Change. She has conducted numerous seminars, workshops and lectures related to organizational development.

 

Shib Narayan Kairy

Shib Narayan Kairy, Director of Finance, was born in 1957. Immediately after completing his M.Com. in Accounting from Dhaka University, he joined the Accounts Section of BRAC in April 1982.

Mr. Kairy has worked at BRAC at various positions - he progressed through the roles of Chief Accountant, Finance Manager and Head of Finance and achieved his current position on September 01, 2006. Since July 2003, Mr. Kairy has also been serving as the Secretary to the BRAC Governing Body.

Mr. Kairy supervises the overall financial control and management over the sources and applications of funds for BRAC activities, both development and commercial. His responsibilities include ensuring effective financial control, transparency and accuracy of financial data & financial reporting.

 

Sukhendra Kumar Sarkar

Sukhendra Kumar Sarkar, Director of Monitoring, Audit and Human Resource Development, was born in 1949. He has a masters in Management from the Asian Institute of Management in Manila. Prior to joining BRAC, Mr. Sarkar was a high school teacher.

Mr. Sarkar joined BRAC in 1973 as Acting Project Administrator of the Sulla Project (An Integrated Rural Development Project). He progressed through positions, becoming a Senior Regional Manager, Program Manager, Program Coordinator, and finally Program Director of the Rural Credit Program. Mr. Sarkar became Director Sector Program of the Rural Development Program in 1992, Director of Monitoring and Audit in 1994, and achieved his present position in 2003.

Throughout his career at BRAC, Mr. Sarkar has been involved in a number of projects. These include the Oral Therapy Extension Program, Child Survival Program, Women’s Health Development Program, and Management Development Program.
