Rokeya Rahman Kabir Women’s Development Centre Launched |

Founder and Chairperson of BRAC, Fazle Hasan Abed, officially inaugurated The Rokeya Rahman Kabir Women’s development Centre on Friday, 23rd of March, 2007. The Centre aims at empowering helpless, vulnerable and battered women. Mr. Abed said at the event that BRAC, like in other areas of Bangladesh, has many programmes in Rajbari including education, health and micro credit. BRAC has also allocated assets worth of TK. 90 million to the 4500 ultra poor population of the area, in order to alleviate poverty and to empower women. Mr. Abed paid homage to the memories of Rokeya Rahman Kabir and said that she had always worked for the development of women and her existence will always be felt through this centre. We wish to carry her incomplete work much further. The Shoptogram Silk Production Centre, established by Rokeya Rahman Kabir, was handed over to BRAC in 1999which started operating as “BRAC Silk Production and Training Centre”. It was later named after Rokeya Rahman Kabir in her honor. Md. Rafikul Islam, the programme coordinator of Ayesha Abed Foundation presided over the event and amongst other speakers were the daughter of Rokeya Rahman Kabir and Professor of Sussex University in the U.K., Dr. Naila Kabir, Mr. Faruk Ahmed, Additional District Commissioner of Rajbari, Mr. Muniruzzaman, Police Super, Md. Mohiuddin Ahmed, the Centre Manager and Anwara Begum, Centre worker. At the end of the event, Mr. Abed and other guests visited the different programmes at the centre. The Silk and Textile Training
and Production Project Centre of Aarong produces silk in 46 looms and
there is employment opportunity for 207 women in embroidery, tailoring,
block printing, screen printing etc. Moreover, 1614 women are working
in 30 subcentres in different villages. In total, this project has provided
employment opportunities for 1821 employees.
