Miyuki Hokugo, Staff Reporter from The Asahi Shimbun, a leading Japanese daily, interviewed BRAC Executive Director on 21st September 2005. While explaining her objective for the interview Hokugo briefly discussed the stereotypical image of Bangladesh as a major Japanese donor-recipient that existed among the common people in Japan and said that in reality that image did not take into account the success of big development programmes of organisations like BRAC. She stressed the need to expose the Bangladeshi success stories in Japan to build awareness about the progress in the country in terms of poverty alleviation and development initiatives. An intense interview with the Executive Director gave her an insight on the diverse activities carried out by BRAC alone under its ‘microcredit plus’ approach that represents the whole spectrum of activities undertaken by numerous other local NGOs. Hokugo had a very useful and lively interview following which she expressed her willingness to visit some of the BRAC programmes despite her busy schedule. “Seeing BRAC would probably mean seeing all the development activities in Bangladesh,” she stated. On her way to the Airport she visited BRAC urban programmes in Ranavola, Uttara accompanied by Tasfiyah Jalil, Intern at BRAC Public Affairs and Communications on September 24. The visit focused on BRAC’s microfinance, health and education programme and included income generating activities carried out through credit operations, health services provided by health workers and volunteers and BRAC’s Non-Formal Primary School. |
