BRAC Afghanistan
BRAC's international activities began in response to the conflict in Afghanistan and the flood of returning refugees in 2002. By implementing the holistic strategy we have developed in Bangladesh and adapting it to suit the local context, BRAC Afghanistan quickly became the largest and most sustainable of all the development organisations in the country with programmes in 23 of the country's 34 provinces. We have since organised nearly 11,000 village organisations throughout the country benefiting 179,000 households (895,000 people). Through our different programmes,we have now disbursed more than USD 96 million in microloans to 143,097 borrowers, provided health services to 3.5 million individuals, graduated 118,416 students (94% girls), and recruited and trained 1,500 model farmers and 1,300 poultry and livestock workers who serve thousands of people. BRAC's Bangladeshi staff successfully trained hundreds of Afghani nationals to manage and implement the programmes and now 95% of the 3,887 BRAC Afghanistan staff are Afghani.
