COVID-19 response: Getting services to those in the most need

Responding to the new coronavirus outbreak with the goal of reaching 80 million of the most vulnerable families across Bangladesh. Our COVID-19 response is focused on the highest risk areas: urban slums, refugee settlements and people living in ultra-poverty.

Scaling up prevention through orientation, safety and safeguarding

  • 134,588 staff and volunteers oriented on COVID-19
  • 2,202,504 hygiene products distributed
  • 1,750 people received phone-based counselling

Strengthening of systems through partnerships

  • 876,000 items of protective wear distributed
  • 1,808 suspected cases of COVID-19 patients identified and referred for testing
  • 132,811 samples collected from 101 kiosks
  • 53,602 calls to hotlines received by 20 dedicated doctors from BRAC

Short-term relief to people living in poverty

  • 352,743 families with low incomes received cash support of BDT 1,500
  • 17,840 households in poverty received food support
  • 10,600 families affected by Cyclone Amphan received cash support
  • 137,423 packets of sanitary napkins distributed to girls and women

COVID-19 Response Strategy

We are leveraging our country-wide reach, relationships and almost 50 years of frontline experience in the field — pouring our collective expertise and dedication into protecting the most vulnerable communities.

Our approach is based on decades of experience responding to previous disease outbreaks, including HIV, TB, AIDS, Cholera and Ebola:

  • Using our massive scale and network in Bangladesh
  • Building on a history of strong government partnership in public health
  • Leveraging nationwide community healthcare network and community level presence
  • Being a platform for innovation and coordination of support
  • Reaching the most vulnerable at the last mile
  • Putting women at the centre of our work in humanitarian-development nexus
  • Providing thought leadership and contextual analysis as the pandemic evolves
