Given Uganda’s youth population, there has been significant amounts of research on the topic. However, the voice and opinions of youth remains limited. Responding to this gap, the Research and Evaluation Unit has began working on a highly participatory research on youth that combines qualitative and quantitative research methods. This initiative is called the youth watch.
The youth watch initiative is envisioned to be a bi-annual research initiative. The 2011 Youth Watch Report is focusing around the five key transitions of youth: work, health, learning, family and citizenship.
The qualitative component includes in-depth case studies around five key transitions. Focus group discussions are also included into the methodology to explore aspirations, priorities, fears and anxieties of youth. The qualitative component will contextualise a large scale survey.
The research will be completed by August 2011.
