Since the start of our operations in Afghanistan in 2002, BRAC has grown to become the country’s largest and most sustainable development organisation. We are implementing our comprehensive development model in all of the country's 34 provinces through a network of nearly 400 offices.
Under the microfinance multiplied approach, we have disbursed more than USD 195 million in microloans to 150,000 borrowers, provided health services to 3.5 million individuals, educated 146,716 students (84% girls) and recruited and trained 1,500 poultry and livestock workers and 885 agriculture extension workers who serve thousands of rural households.
BRAC's programmes in Afghanistan are bolstered by rigorous research, monitoring and training. We are also extending our training services to help build capacity of government and non-government organisations. At the end of 2009, we employed 4,201 staff members, of whom 4,016 were Afghan nationals and 40% were women.
