We Mourn

BRAC is shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of Aminul Alam (1949-2010), a member of its Governing Body and Executive Director, BRAC International.

Amin joined BRAC in 1975 and has been a principal architect of BRAC programmes, leaving an indelible mark across all of BRAC’s work.

He led the expansion of BRAC’s programmes across Bangladesh and subsequently into ten countries in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. Under his leadership, BRAC’s international programmes earned an unparalleled reputation for the range and scale of its activities.

His boundless energy and selfless devotion to duty in the service of the poor garnered wide admiration and respect throughout BRAC and the development community. His untimely loss will be deeply felt by his family, friends, colleagues and the millions of poor in Bangladesh and abroad whose lives he touched.

Then Amin bhai personified BRAC-in-action.

He exemplified Martin Luther King`s drive -- "the fierce urgency of now."

Always in a hurry.
To do.
To do more.
To serve.

Since 1975 when he joined BRAC as a program organizer as the idealistic young Marxist to the last day when he got back from the flood crisis in Pakistan. He pushed on. He pushed through.

He was small in size but large in heart and courage.
His fearless can do drive permeated and shaped the BRAC culture.

He was impatient.

He was important.

As important to Abed as ying is to yang.

Collaborators.
Conspirators.
Colleagues.
Friends.
Loyal.

Amin was a builder of people, and institutions.

He was a force of nature. Passionate, volcanic, dependable beyond measure.
With an impish grin, he could be fierce in battle, tender when needed and totally charming.

He was quick.
Quick to assess.
Quick to judge.
Quick to flare.
Quick to apologize.
Quick to seize opportunities.

He was highly motivating, rentlentlessly entrepreneurial, at times infuriating, and overall commanding -- with an amazing degree of precision. Amin bhai was committed.
Devoted.
Seemingly unstoppable.
He was a builder.
Driven from a well of deep conviction.

He was a great storyteller.
And a leader who possessed every season.

I learned so much from Amin bhai. I was blessed to work closely with him, travel with him, share his commitment to helping the people of Haiti or respond to the crisis in Pakistan. Regularly get his late night calls. Occasionally get his thanks and praise. Share some meals. And a few rare moments of relaxation along the Nile river in Sudan, the New York harbor, or an ocean in Tanzania or Sierra Leone.

I will never forget touring Manhattan with him and his young son on his first visit to the City before going to university. Or making up after our first grand scale fight. Or hearing his voice Wednesday night as he called to check on Haiti, Pakistan, West Africa and brief me on the East Africa loan fund.

I celebrate his legacy and contributions to building BRAC and serving poor people in so many countries for 35 years.

I offer a shared embrace to my BRAC family -- and directly to Amin bhai`s dear wife, sons, and all those related to him by blood, marriage and choice.

We mourn his passing, and cherish his memory.

It is so very hard to accept this news.

He left Pakistan at 8-45 AM on the 27th September, 2010. Before departure in the VIP lounge of Benazir Bhutto Airport, he told me, "coming" and shook hands with me. We gazed at him until his minibus was visible. We couldn`t think that it would be our last meeting with him. May the departed soul rest in peace!

It seems as though it was just yesterday that we had a great meeting in New York in Susan`s office earlier this summer - following his most recent trip to Haiti -- and we had come to have wonderful mutual affection -- talking of talent attracting, engagement and retention throughout BRAC International.

A Tribute to Amin Bhai, a BRAC Legend

Words fail me to describe this giant of a man who dedicated his entire life to BRAC. I was privileged to have had the opportunity to work with him once again his year after a break of nine years. To me, he was simply Amin Bhai, a familiar friend in a new environment. To millions in the villages of Bangladesh and to many more in African and Asian countries, he will be remembered as a man who had the compassion and courage to change the lives of the poor and downtrodden. He even remembered the families he worked with in Rowmari, his first posting in BRAC after four decades. His dedication, his dynamism, and his drive is unparalleled in BRAC.

It is hard to think of BRAC without Amin Bhai. Let us remember his tremendous contribution to BRAC and pay tribute to this great individual.

It is difficult to find words to express the sense of loss we feel upon learning the sad news of Amin bhai`s passing. All of us at ShoreBank who have had the privilege of working with BRAC have worked closely with Amin. He was the center of so many initiatives and efforts at BRAC.

On a personal note, I felt that Amin and I established a bond of understanding - an almost familial friendship - that comes only when works very closely with someone bonded by respect and commitment. Our bond, of course, was BRAC. As you know, he loved BRAC deeply with a special loyalty to you.

It is indeed a sad day for the Asian University for Women( AUW) to receive the news of the demise of Mr.Amin, International Director for BRAC. Mr. Amin has always been a true friend of the university and has helped us recruit students from Afghanistan. In fact we were about to approach him to help us in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

We, the entire BRAC Afghanistan family, are deeply saddened and shocked with the sudden death of our beloved Amin Bhai, the Executive Director of BRAC International. We could not tell any more Amin Bhai. He passed away last night at about 11.15 in Apollo Hospital, Dhaka. He was our guide and guardian in all our endeavors both at personal and professional life. He left Afghanistan on the 26th after visiting Mazar E Sharif and Kapisa Provinces and when I saw off at the Kabul Airport he said `Fazlu I am feeling sleepy`. Now he is in deep sleep for ever.

We express our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to each of the members of his family. We pray for the salvation of his departed soul.

I learnt with shock today about Aminbhai leaving us. I know how close he was to you and what a pillar to BRAC.

During my last visit to Dhaka, we had a brief meeting with him, he had been ill, but as usual, thinking big about BRAC, endorsing its mission, and inspiring. Somehow, for a person like Aminbhai, even if one knows that he was ill, we know that he drove himself very hard, and we somehow believed in his indestructibility.

I feel a personal loss as I did several consultancies with BRAC over the past years, and each and every time had great interactions with Aminbhai. I join you in the sadness for this great loss.

For you personally, I know, this is a great loss; he was not only a most trusted friend and partner, but also a passionate spirit who worked with you tirelessly towards defining the mission of BRAC and then taking it global. Over the years I had only one opportunity to meet with Amin Bhai. However, a few years ago, I spent an evening with Gowher Bhai in Cambridge, MA and that was when I was smitten by the magic of BRAC. Needless to say, Amin Bhaiâ��s name figured most prominently in all the stories I heard that evening. Of late my friend, Moushimi, had kept me updated about the stellar leadership role that Amin Bhai was playing towards spreading the work of BRAC all over Africa.

To you, and through you, to the wife and children of Amin Bhai, members of his family and, of course, to the thousands of members of the BRAC family, I send my most heartfelt condolences. The world is a poorer place with the death of Amin Bhai and yet, quite paradoxically, it is also a richer place because of the countless contributions he has made towards the betterment of humankind.

While Amin Bhai will no longer be with us in person he shall always remain with us in our hearts. We will miss him.

My two and half years at BRAC are so far one of the most defining periods of my life; it would not have been possible or have made as much of an impact without Amin bhai. There is no doubt that he had his unique style and it took me a while to understand that behind his abrupt mannerisms was a true commitment to the cause and intention to shape the next generation of BRAC with `tough love.`

My initial misconception was that he was a part of BRAC`s `old school generation` and resistant to change. With his guidance during the HRLS Review, his support when I was met with resistance and his gamble in delegating me (a well-intentioned but inexperienced girl!) with the responsibility of operations proved my initial misconception wrong.
Even with his growing responsibilities and new priorities he never hesitated from enquiring about the program or wishing it well.

I hope each of us in our lives and through the program are able to meet his expectations and keep his vision alive. Amin bhai has left his mark on each program of BRAC and the heart of anyone who as ever had the good fortune (or misfortune depending on his mood!) of working with him. My memories of my time with him has left a lasting impression and strengthened my commitment to the cause; for that I will always be grateful.

I am deeply shocked at the sudden death of Amin Bhai. I am expressing my heartfelt condolence to the members of his family and associates in BRAC.

I am unfortunate because I never got chance to meet him directly. I have had relation with him over telephone.

BRAC is such a huge organization, like a state within state in Bangladesh. I am a bloody political activist. It has operations almost every villages in Bangladesh. Thousands of educated girls and boys have recruited in BRAC operations. As a political activist I have to communicate with Executives of BRAC on different matters. I experienced bureaucratic responses mostly but Amin Bhai. Amin Bhai was used to hear me and gave solutions instantly. It is very surprising that almost every one working in BRAC at field level were known to Amin Bhai. They are used to address him not as Sir but Amin Bhai.
I feel death of Amin Bhai is a great loss for not only BRAC FAMILY but also for the nation.
I do pray for eternal peace for the departed soul of AMIN Bhai.

The measure of a life well-lived is not in how much money one has or what possessions they have accumulated, but rather through the lives they touched and the sorrow they leave behind. Amin bhai was an inspiration to all he met and a mentor to many of us in the development community. His intelligence and commitment to the poor was legendary and many of the BRAC innovations and positive impacts on the lives of the poor in Bangladesh and internationally grew from his relentless pursuit of innovative ideas and from his energy. His commitment to the people served by BRAC was unlimited and his energy unbounded.
