The Empowerment and Livlihood for Adolescent (ELA) programme aims to empower adolescent girls both in terms of entrepreneurial and business skills as well as socially. The aim is to build their capacity to help them lead self reliant and dignified lives and become active agents of social change in their families and communities. This programme is being implemented through all three East African BRAC offices; Uganda Tanzania and South Sudan.
The Research and Evaluation Unit is conducting an impact evaluation for the programme across three countries. Is providing entrepreneurship and social empowerment training an effective means of raising the well-being of adolescent girls? Is microfinance a complement for entrepreneurship and empowerment training for youth? These are the key questions that is being explored through the research initiative.
The evaluation is based on randomized control trial (RCT) at village level and altogether 16,300 girls are participating in the surveys. The research plan includes a baseline and two rounds of follow-up surveys
In Uganda the baseline surevey was completed in 2008 and the first followup survey was done in 2010. The second followup will be done in 2012
In Tanazania the baseline survey was completed in 2009 and the first follow up survey is being done in 2011. The second follow up will be conduced in 2013.
Baseline survey in South Sudan was done in 2010 and the first and second follow up survey will be conducted in 2012 and 2014 respectively.
