BRAC Printers

A BRAC Social Enterprise

Background

BRAC Printers, initiated in 1977, is a full-service desktop publishing facility. Eighty percent of BRAC Printer's production is for BRAC’s education programmes and office requirements. The enterprise also produces calendars, diaries, security printings and university publications. BRAC Printers is the organization’s first social enterprise that came in on two accounts. First, BRAC was expanding its education program, and needed a printing facility. Second, BRAC felt the need to establish an income source to reduce donor dependency in sustaining its development intervention.

As the enterprise came into being it also provided jobs and valuable job training for BRAC’s clients, serving the organization’s mission to alleviate poverty. In its first year of operation, the press made $17,400 in profits. By 2007, it was generating $340,000 in profits.

BRAC Printers today

Today BRAC Printers is one of the three largest in Bangladesh, turning out several million textbooks a year, all of BRAC’s stationeries, leaflets, posters, checks, and other forms of security printing. Its clients include other NGOs, donors, universities, and range of private sector companies. Where the second goal is concerned, BRAC Printers and Printing Pack together contributed over $600,000 to BRAC’s health, education, and other development programs in 2006.
