BRAC Feed Mills

A BRAC Social Enterprise

Strengthening the livestock industry with quality feed supply

Background

Although by 1992 more than 200,000 women had their poultry rearing operations financed by BRAC, the demand for balanced chicken feed was far out-stripping the capacity to produce it from locally available inputs. Additionally, the demand for high-yielding varieties of chicken had expanded beyond BRAC as well, adding to the national demand for high quality feed. A stopgap effort was devised in 1993 with BRAC’s creation of a centralized poultry feed plant. The plant crushed dried fish, oil cakes, and oyster shells and mixed it with vitamins to produce a balanced, standardized combination that could be packaged and distributed for sale, first to group members and then to the wider public.

BRAC Feed Mills today

BRAC Feeds Mills has grown in the last decade to cater poultry, cattle and fish farmers in Bangladesh with quality feed at an affordable price. The enterprise has contributed to the overall growth of the poultry industry and has created income-generating activities for millions of rural people. Recently, BRAC has taken a new step to support the people who are in poultry business, by providing veterinary doctors, who in turn, grant sound medical advice and practical solution to areas of poultry health and safety. BRAC Feed Mills uses advanced machineries and produces poultry feed in an automated process. During production, all ingredients of the feed are mixed at a balance rate which is helpful for the growth of the chickens. The ingredients of the feed are maintained through a feed analysis machine, which helps to increase the capability of the hens for laying eggs up to 95%. The enterprise currently operates three feed mills, which are located in Manikganj, Nillphamari, Sreepur. In 2010, the total production from these mills were 36,342 MT.
