Every year on October 17th, the international community observes the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The day presents an opportunity to acknowledge the effort and struggle of people living in poverty, a chance for them to make their concerns heard, and a moment to recognise that poor people are the first ones to fight against poverty.
This year’s theme, "From Poverty to Decent Work: bridging the gap", resonates strongly with BRAC’s work. All of our interventions are geared towards creating an enabling environment in which the poor are able to achieve economic empowerment through self-employment. In supporting their micro enterprises to grow, we are also helping transform them into employers, creating a virtuous cycle of opportunity.
We therefore dedicate this year’s celebration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty to the millions of women and men of BRAC, in Bangladesh and across the world, who work tirelessly to ensure the realisation of potential through decent work for the world’s poorest.
