The BRAC Limb and Brace Centre (BLBC) was established in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2000 to provide low cost, quality artificial lower limbs and braces, and physiotherapy to enhance mobility of the disabled. Because of increased demand, a second center was opened in Mymensingh. The centres also provide information, education and counseling services to the disabled and their family members. In 2009, a total of 2,578 patients received services from the centers.
The centres offer services on a tiered payment plan, meaning that patients pay only what they can afford for the treatment they need. In this way, the Center becomes sustainable, and in 2009, the cost recovery for services at the centre was 110%.
The centre uses The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Polypropylene Technology and materials from CR Equipements SA in Switzerland. Since it began in 1979, the ICRC’s Physical Rehabilitation Programme has encouraged the use of technology compliant with the conditions that the ICRC works in, such as developing nations and conflict-affected areas. The ICRC chose to develop its own prosthetic technique instead of buying ready-made orthopedic components because it recognized the need for low-cost but consistent materials, technology that is easy to use and repair, and durable and easy prosthetics. Polyproylene (PP) was introduced into ICRC projects in 1988, replacing the previously-used wooden/rubber foot.
