Bangladesh: Education: Secondary and Continuing Education

Secondary SchoolsThe Post-primary Basic and Continuing Education (PACE) programme was initiated to provide quality teaching to students who have successfully completed primary schooling. The objective of our secondary schools is to bring a qualitative change in the teaching techniques and learning in secondary schools, improve the capacities of teachers in non-government rural secondary schools, particularly in core subjects, and improve management procedures within schools.

Two unique traits of BRAC’s secondary schools are mentoring through Chhatrabandhu – where senior students and literate local people voluntarily teach poor students, and Medhabikash – where we assist a number of poor but talented students, providing financial support and opportunities to improve their English and computer skills.

Continuing Education Programme: The Continuing Education Programme was introduced in 1995 along with BRAC’s Gonokendros (community libraries). These initiatives help people maintain their literacy skills, and promote reading opportunities for children, students, and adults.

Gonokendros also provide computer training for children, students and youth at an affordable price. These community libraries contain at least 1,000 books, 2-3 magazines, daily newspapers, and are usually managed by locally recruited women librarians. They also preserve local historical items, lend out textbooks to poor students, and provide a safe area for them to meet peers. Gonokendros also operate mobile libraries for women and the elderly and run a special section for children to encourage them to read at an early age.
