Bangladesh Agriculture & Food Security: Seed processing

Seed production, distribution and marketing
Farmers were lacking high quality, high yielding agriculture seeds which increases production, higher profits for farmers and moves us forward in being self sufficient in food production.  BRAC started seed production in 1996 with assistance from the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) under the Ministry of Agriculture’s CDP (SIPU) project.

BRAC produces high quality seeds on BRAC farms and through contracted growers.

In 2009, 4,121 contact farmers under the close supervision of BRAC seed production specialists produced most of these seeds. Due to high demand, some additional seeds are imported from international sources.

Seed processing
BRAC has established two seed processing and packing plants in Sreepur, Gazipur and Sherpur, Bogra. The yearly capacity of these two processing centres is around 5,500 Metric Tons.
