To mitigate the sufferings of the coastal community, BRAC with the interest-free loan from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) has been implementing the project “Agriculture Credit Program for Cyclone Victims in Bangladesh” since January 2010 in 27 upazilas of 7 coastal districts (Barguna, Patuakhali, Jhalokathi, Pirojpur, Bagerhat, Khulna and Satkhira) of southern Bangladesh affected by the cyclones SIDR and AILA.
The overall objective of the project is to increase food production and household income of the coastal communities of Bangladesh through interest-free credit support in different productive sectors. We are providing loan to grow rice and non-rice crops in agriculture sector; buying fishing boat and net and purchasing inputs for fish culture in ponds and ghers in fisheries sector; buying or repairing power tiller, power pump, thresher and harvester in agro-machinery sector; and buying goods and raw materials for small business, and establishment of small cottage industry. We usually provide technical assistance in crop and fisheries sector to increase productivity and income. The borrowers need to repay loan in monthly installments.
