Where We Work : Afghanistan : Education

Our Education Programme has taken up a number of initiatives aimed at the comprehensive improvement and progress of the country’s education infrastructure. We provide an opportunity for quality education to thousands of underprivileged Afghan children.

Our 24 years of experience providing non-formal primary education in Bangladesh to deprived children, who were out of the education system, provided the basis for us to create a successful education programme in Afghanistan.

More than 84,500 children, 84 % of them girls, are now attending BRAC's 2,654 community based schools in 11 provinces of Afghanistan.  The aim of our schools is:

  • to encourage communities to establish schools in rural areas
  • to build the skills and self-confidence level of the children
  • to mainstream the children into the formal system

Empowerment and Livelihoods for Adolescents

We organise adolescent clubs in the local communities that provide girls with safe spaces, where they can access learning materials to encourage their continued education, and meet with other girls their age to discuss important issues.

Adolescent Clubs: Since launching the programme, we have established 131 clubs in the heart of local communities and recruited more than 3, 400 members.

The clubs are the focal point for a number of elements including:

  • Life Skills Training Course
  • Income Generation Skills Training
  • Community Participation

Increasing opportunities for teenage girls: We exclusively target vulnerable teenage girls to become members of our innovative livelihood and life skills training programmes.
