What We Do : Social Enterprises

Enterprises

"Each enterprise is modelled as a solution to a social problem - the problem of ensuring incomes and opportunities for the poor people to find markets for their products."

- Fazle Hasan Abed, Founder and Chairperson

A social enterprise does not pursue profit exclusively. It looks for the ‘triple bottom line’, comprising  people, planet and profit, which must be considered if the business is to be judged a success.

BRAC’s Social Enterprises have evolved to support its core programmes. They enable BRAC to attain its vision and mission by supporting development interventions and creating job opportunities. This, in effect, empowers the poor to realise their potential to break free from their social and economic restrictions.

The enterprises are not driven towards maximising profit for the shareholders, but rather work to benefit their stakeholders, who include the millions of deprived and disenfranchised poor people across the country.

By developing these enterprises, BRAC has pioneered a unique model of sustainable business. At present, 14 of BRAC’s Social Enterprises have combined sales of USD 96 million, and a total net surplus of USD 8.5 million.
