What We Do : Emergency Relief & Environment

Disaster Management

BRAC’s Disaster, Environment & Climate Change (DECC) Programme was created in 2008 as a result of the Cyclone Sidr, which hit Bangladesh in November 2007.

Traditionally, we had been responding to natural disasters in a reactive way. Sidr made us realise that this traditional method of response is inadequate in most circumstances, and climate change would potentially worsen the situation as the frequency and severity of such occurrences increase.

Therefore, it is the objective of the DECC Programme to build our capacity towards a more proactive response to natural disasters, in an environment which is increasingly threatened by rapid climate change.

We seek to:

  • Promote better disaster preparation & management
  • Increase awareness about climate change and its impact
  • Undertake research to identify successful risk reduction and coping mechanisms

We work in the following areas:

  • Capacity Building for risk reduction, and institutionalisation within BRAC and its communities
  • Risk Reduction Strategies
  • Adaptation Strategies
  • Linkages & Knowledge Generation
