In the Balochistan province of Pakistan, the most vulnerable people suffer severely from seasonal income crisis, acute food insecurity, severe malnutrition, scarcity of water and sanitation. Due to unfavourable weather and under utilisation of resources, most of these people survive on low purchasing power with diminished economic opportunities.

BRAC Pakistan is targeting ultra poor in Balochistan to help them graduate out of poverty. In collaboration with Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF), BRAC Pakistan initiated the Programme for Poverty Reduction (PPR) in the Lasbela district of Balochistan.
PPR builds on the earlier learnings of Challenging Frontiers of Poverty Reduction-Targeting Ultra Poor (CFPR-TUP) and Livelihood Enhancement and Protection –Institutional Development (LEP-ID) projects implemented in Lasbela.

PPR is specially designed to meet the needs of the vulnerable and marginalised, who are deprived of social and economic opportunities. The programme has an integrated model to provide a holistic environment conducive to socioeconomic uplift of ultra poor, poor and marginalised communities. The objective is poverty reduction through creation of sustainable conditions of social and economic development, including increased income and production capacity and social support.

The programme support includes social mobilisation for strengthening of community institutions and awareness raising, health coverage and improvement of government health facilities and development of qualified paramedical staff; education promotion through community sensitisation, support of government schools, teachers training and establishment of school enterprise. It also works towards livelihood improvement through productive assets transfer, skills and enterprise development trainings, continuous assistance and eventual graduation to microfinance; physical infrastructure development in the form of renewable energy schemes, irrigation schemes, and drinking water schemes to collectively provide a sustainable enabling environment that will result in socioeconomic development and poverty reduction.
